6 Best Weed Killer for Lawn

Before you start any weed control program, you need to identify which types of weeds you’re trying to get rid of. Each requires different products and application methods.

Some treatments are time sensitive, while others can be done anytime during the growing season.

Broadleaf weeds, for example, include any weed that has leaves, such as dandelions, clover or creeping Charlie (ground ivy).

The key to killing weeds is to use a suitable weed killer and apply it with the smallest applicator needed to do the job. That’ll not only save you time and money but also keep you from needlessly getting chemicals into the environment.

Broadleaf herbicides are extremely effective, provided they you use them according to the directions on the container or user manual. Pay special attention to the moisture, temperature and the wind limitations.

Most liquid weed exterminating products only work in temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees F. At higher temperatures, the chemicals will vaporize before the weeds can absorb them. At lower temperatures, the weeds aren’t growing fast enough to absorb the chemicals.

No matter how healthy your lawn is, a few isolated weeds might pop up. That doesn’t call for a whole-yard treatment. Instead, you should spot-treat the weeds with a small, trigger-controlled, pump-up pressure sprayer with a selective weed killer.

You can apply non-selective killers with sprayers, but you’ll kill everything in the area, including your lawn and any other plants. So, the best way to kill the weeds while protecting surrounding plants is by wiping the grass blades with the non-selective herbicide.

You need to wear a cloth glove over a plastic or rubber chemically resistant glove to protect your skin. Dip your gloved hand into the weed killer and then simply grab the blades near the base and pull the herbicide over the grass blades.

Don’t worry about coating every single blade. The chemical will absorb into the plant, make its way down to the roots and kill the entire plant. Most will die in a few days, but stubborn weeds may need repeated treatments.

Best Weed Killer For Lawns
General Guidelines

  • If possible, buy concentrated formulas because they’re much cheaper than premixed types.
  • Mix only what you need, and use it within three days of mixing. Once you mix herbicides with water, they lose their effectiveness in a short time.
  • Keep weed killers in a cool place and protect them from freezing to make sure they stay effective for a long time.
  • Protect your decorative plants with plastic or cardboard during lawn treatments. Even just a little overspray can damage or kill your plants.
  • Some lawn grasses, especially “warm weather” ones found in the Sun Belt, can be harmed or even killed by broadleaf herbicides. Be sure to read the label to find out which grass types are vulnerable.
  • Apply weed killers when grass is slightly damp or dry, and avoid applying during hot weather or high humidity conditions.
  • For best results, apply in the morning or early evening.
  • Some formulas need application when there’s no rain in the forecast for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Always wear socks, shoes, long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, gloves, and glasses to keep the liquid off your skin and out of your eyes.
  • Keep your kids and pets and off your lawn for at least 48 hours after application.
  • Water the area well to rinse, and let it dry.
  • To keep safe, always read the label for special warnings about toxicity.

Green Gobbler ULTIMATE VINEGAR 30% Concentrate

Green Gobbler ULTIMATE VINEGAR Concentrate is a liquid weed killer made out of 30% vinegar. It simply burns out weeds out instantly.

This organic weed killer is non-selective, but you can plant new seeds safely one day after because the vinegar evaporates completely within a few hours. It vanishes really fast if it is warm outside.

Like most organic herbicides, it is safe to use around children and pets, and it can be used in your vegetable garden as well. White distilled vinegar is the most common type of vinegar in American households.

It is made from grain-based ethanol which is converted to acetic acid and diluted to preferred acidity with water. Well, in this case, it is converted into a 30% vinegar concentrate which is effective weed killer but also a cleaning liquid in and around the home.

If your garden is infested by marsh marigolds, for example, you’ve noticed that this weed is very difficult to destroy. It has many survival strategies as regards its seed, roots and the very small bulbs which cluster around the roots. This product will kill the tops of weeds. It is non-selective, however, and will severely damage anything it is put on.

It has nothing but excellent results with Nutsedge, as well. Nutsedge is a perennial, grass-like weed that thrives on poorly drained sections of your garden and counts on warm weather to grow faster. Once you apply Green Gobbler, every single leaf will be dead and crispy brown in less than a day.

Hand weeding sometimes turns out to be a useless waste of time and energy. In addition, not all the gardeners and homeowners are willing to use herbicides. Green Gobbler ULTIMATE VINEGAR Concentrate This product is an eco-friendly product recommended for controlling broadleaf weeds.

While it does not destroy the bulbs, light spraying on new growth will do wonders and it’s an easy task. It does not require much product or time and it will keep the weed under control. You will have the extra time and attention to devote to other gardening jobs.

Southern Ag 2,4-D Amine Weed Killer

Southern Ag 2,4-D Amine Weed Killer is a selective broadleaf weed Control product. It is recommended for numerous broadleaf weeds and certain 2,4-D susceptible woody plants without harming the most established grasses. (Not applicable for Bermuda grass).

To get the appropriate mixture, fill the spray tank half full, then add the required amount of this product and continue filling the tank with water. Keep agitator running when filling the tank and during spray operations.

You should apply this product as a water spray during warm weather when weeds or brush are actively growing. Treatment during drought periods will often give poor results.

Use low spray pressure to minimize spray drift. On cropland and along roadsides, do not exceed 20 psi pressure. You need to apply enough spray volume to provide uniform coverage of weeds and brush.

The lower dosages recommended on the label will be sufficient for young, succulent growth of sensitive weed species. For less sensitive species and where control is more difficult, the higher dosages will be needed.

Deep-rooted perennial weeds such as Canada Thistle and Field Bindweed and many woody plants usually require repeated applications for best control. Do not use in greenhouses.

Remember not use the same equipment for applying other materials to 2,4-D susceptible crops as it may result in harming other plants.

Also, do not apply this product to or otherwise permit it to come into contact with cotton, grapes, fruit trees, vegetables, flowers or other desirable crop or ornamental plants which are sensitive to 2,4-D.

Another thing, make sure not to permit spray mist containing it to drift onto the above mentioned plants since even very small quantities of spray, which may not even be visible, can cause severe injury during both growing and dormant periods.

Use coarse sprays to minimize drift. With ground equipment, spray drift can be lessened by keeping the spray boom as low as possible, by applying 20 gallons or more of spray per acre or by using no more than 20 psi with flat fan or flooding flat fan nozzle tips and by not spraying when the wind exceeds 6 to 7 miles per hour.

Do not apply with hollow cone-type insecticide or other nozzles that produce a fine droplet spray. When stored at temperatures below freezing, you might need to warm contents to 45 F and mix thoroughly before using.

Finally, here’s the list of weeds which you can get rid of using Southern Ag 2,4-D Amine Weed Killer:

Compare-N-Save Concentrate Grass and Weed Killer

Concentrate Grass and Weed Killer from Compare-N-Save contains 41% glyphosate. This product is effective against most weeds. If broadleaf weeds have been threatening to take over your beautiful lawn, hedge or driveway, Compare-N-Save Concentrate will get rid of the weeds straight from the root.

Since glyphosate is a post-emergent herbicide with no residual activity, it is safe for treating gardens. You can use it while planting or reseeding to slow weed growth. Glyphosate only works on actively growing weeds and plants, so you will not get results as a pre-emergent weed killer as it will not kill seeds or dormant weeds.

This product works slowly over the course of several days, up to a week or even longer. It inhibits certain plant enzymes that are required for plant life function. In both dry and wet weather, Compare-N-Save will act furiously. It will spread really well on lawns, which enhances its effectiveness.

Some weed killers are bound to cost you quite a lot of money in the long run. With Compare-N-Save Concentrate, this is not the case. This product is affordable and each pack totals to about 85 gallons of a solution which can be used to treat up to 25,000 square feet.

In addition, while most weed killers are only effective during dry and sunny months and lose their potency in cold weather or during rainy seasons because of their low-grade formulae, Compare-N-Save Concentrate doesn’t. It does the job well even if you apply it a few hours before the rain. It will retain its potency throughout rainy seasons.

This product will not discriminate on its plant victims, so you need to be very careful. It will kill all the plants you accidentally spray in larger dosage.

This concentrate is 41% so once a certain saturation level is reached within the weed, applying more glyphosate will not accelerate obliteration of weeds. It is more effective to treat the unwanted plants several times with a 2% solution over the course of a month than to treat them once with a stronger solution.

Bear in mind that this is a concentrate, so don't pour it directly into your sprayer. You'll be wasting the product without getting more efficiency.

  • One of the most cost-effective weeds and grass killers available
  • Perfect for sidewalk and driveway cracks
  • It is rain-proof in 2 hours

Roundup Pro Weed Killer Concentrate

Roundup Pro Weed Killer Concentrate delivers unsurpassed weed control that’s rainfast in as little as one hour. Proudly made in the USA, this weed obliterating product is not susceptible to wash-off, and the adequate residues will remain potent for protection even after the rain.

If you wonder whether application of Roundup Pro Weed Killer Concentrate will be effective if rainfall occurs too soon after the application, rest assured that even if there’s rainfall occurring only one hour after application, this product will remain efficient.
