5 Best Soaker Hoses

What is a soaker hose?

What allows a soaker hose to provide a perfect drip irrigation system in your garden is a myriad of tiny holes which are punctured throughout the whole length or the hose. When you turn on the water faucet, these holes allow water to drip water straight into the soil near the roots of your plants.

You can lay out a number of soaker hoses based on your watering needs and this will improve the watering efficiency and bring the much-needed water to your plants. Soaker hoses are positioned on the ground near the base of whichever plants need watering.

Buying guide: Which Soaker hose features are essential for your watering needs?

Traditional hoses with spray nozzles as well as sprinkles shoot water on your plants’ leaves, trunks and onto the ground surrounding the plants. Excess water will splash your paths, your kids’ bicycles or your car. With soaker hoses, every drop of water goes where it should, and no water is wasted.

In order to buy the right soaker hose for your garden, we suggest that you consider the following features and their benefits.

How long should my soaker hose be?

The hose needs to be long enough to reach all the plants in your garden. So do the measuring and take into account the future layout of the hose as there are various layout options.

The usual length standards are 25 feet, 50 feet, 75 feet and 100 feet. However, you can combine two or more hoses as long as your water pressure allows it.

As a rule, the total hose length should not exceed 100 feet in order to get normal water pressure.

What is the optimal water pressure for a soaker hose?

Quality best soaker hoses can handle higher water pressure without bursting or leakage. Do bear in mind the optimal working pressure for drip irrigation is about 10 psi. You need to get a seeping effect out of your hose and not sprinkling.

Because the majority of home water systems are at about 50psi, we urge you to use the additional pressure reducer. They are affordable and easy to attach to your faucet. Once you install one, it will efficiently regulate dripping.

On the other hand, since soaker hoses have one open end to attach to your faucet and the other end can be connected to an additional hose, you will need to adjust the water pressure to allow sufficient flow for extended lengths.

This is where a water pressure regulator will also come in handy. In addition do over-dripping, low-quality soaker hoses can burst and flood the soil if the water pressure is too high.

Which materials are best for a durable and strong soaker hose?

To provide durability and strength at a reasonable cost, most soaker hoses are made of recycled rubber. Such hoses are the most durable and can stand up to the weather as well the ground conditions of the soil, dirt, mud, wood chips and trimmings.

The material is also strong enough to allow for puncturing all those small holes during the manufacturing process.

What else is needed to install a soaker hose system?

You will also need the fittings for your soaker hose, a garden hose of suitable length, hose pins, a faucet adapter, tee connectors, a pressure reducer and we strongly suggest installing a programmable timer (optional but recommended).

The timer is extremely useful if you want to set the time of the day when you want to start and end the dripping watering. If you are suddenly invited to barbeque or a pot-luck supper, the timer will look after the watering.

Melnor Flat Soaker Garden Hose; 50 ft.; 2 Pack

Melnor Flat Soaker Garden Hose is made of a woven mesh material with composite reinforced structure. This means that you can safely flex it, turn it, bend it and twist it, which makes it one of the most flexible soaker hoses out there.

Most regular and soaker hoses are made of recycled rubber. This often makes them difficult to bend at an angle you need. For this reason, Melnor Flat Soaker Garden Hose is a perfect option for those of you who are looking for more flexibility.

Another benefit of this choice of materials is that the hose is more durable in the sun in comparison to regular rubber models.

Apex 1030-100 Soil Soaking Hose

Apex 1030-100 Soil Soaking Hose comes at 100 feet with above average quality of materials and connectors but may struggle to deliver at lower water pressure. Let’s consider the pros first.

To put it simply, installing this hose is as easy as laying a rope next to your plants. It comes straight out of the box and ready to use. The hose is solid quality and it works great if you have good water pressure.

What I mean is this: most complaints about this hose itself refer to a much better dripping along the first 50’. The rest of the hose doesn't seem to be as efficient. The reason behind this may be the low water pressure or to straight setup.

According to some test watering results, at 70psi of water pressure, there is almost no water output in the last half of the hose. There is a strong drip output at the start of the hose and the efficiency just drops at the end.

The hose itself is much better quality than the average soaker hose. The connectors are also good quality and don't leak. To some, that's definitely worth the extra cost. To others, the issue with the uneven dripping will be a deal breaker. If in doubt, go for a shorter version from Apex.

Things We Liked

  • Vinyl construction for improved flexibility
  • Available in a 25', 50', 75' and 100' lengths
  • ABS Plastic E-Z Tite brass couplings allow for secure connections
  • Proudly made in the USA

Things We Didn't Like

  • The 100-foot hose may have issues with uneven dripping performance
